Repair or Replace – When is the best time to upgrade your Garage Door?

by Zap Garage Doors|1 November, 2021

A new garage door is an investment which, when serviced regularly and maintained carefully, will last you for many years to come.

However, somewhere down the line, you may find that your garage door experiences a fault. So, what do you do in this situation?

How do you know whether it would be best to repair the door, or replace it altogether?

When faced with this problem, there are a number of factors to consider. These include cost, safety, the extent of the issue, and the age of the door, to name a few.

To help you decide on the best solution, our garage door expert’s have created this quick and easy guide to the ‘repair or replace debate’. With these tips, you’ll know exactly when is the right time to replace your garage door.

Situations where it’s best to repair

  • The panels are bent – if it’s just the panels that are bending or beginning to crack, it’s most likely that this is just a simple cosmetic issue. This means that it’s quick, easy and affordable for a specialist to repair. Just make sure that you address this issue as soon as you notice it, rather than leaving it to develop into a more complicated repair job.
  • The sensors are malfunctioning – issues with the sensors are not uncommon. In fact, these issues are most commonly caused by issues with their connection to the power supply. For instance, it could be due to a simple misalignment, which is easily fixed by a professional.
  • Small areas of rotting wood – if you notice this in a small area of the door, then it can be replaced with new wood, through a targeted repair job.
  • Cracked paint – this is a common sign of aging, which can crop up if you’ve been using the same garage door for a considerable period of time. However, it doesn’t mean that your door is working any less well. In fact, you can easily repaint the door yourself, which will restore your door back to its original, neat finish.

Situations where it’s best to replace

  • The doors are warped – are your garage doors heavily misshapen? This could have been caused by, for example, accidentally reversing your car into the doors. If so, has this stopped the doors from being able to open or shut fully? If so, this would compromise the security of the doors, and so we would advise that you replace them.
  • You are wanting to resell your property – upgrading your garage door is one of the best ways to improve the resale value of a home. As a result, if you have an old garage door and you’re thinking about moving house, this would be a good investment.
  • Your garage doors are less energy efficient – some older models of garage doors are significantly less energy efficient than modern options. As a result, if you notice that your garage doors are allowing a lot of heat to escape your property, it would be worth upgrading your door to a more modern, energy efficient model.
