Companies That Started in a Garage
by Zap Garage Doors|22 October, 2019
This month, Zap Garage Doors will be covering the most famous companies that we know and admire, which started from something as small as a garage. From glorious smelling candles to the latest technology – let’s take a look at who makes the list and how it all began.
Amazon
Now a huge e-commerce online sales platform, Amazon or its original name, Cadabra, started out in Jeff Bezos’ garage in Seattle, Washington. Founded in 1994, Amazon started out with Mr Bezos’ $10,000 investment and from here, Jeff, his wife and two programmers commenced work on Amazon.
Jeff and his wife began selling books online which then lead to electronics, home & kitchen, digital music, arts, crafts & sewing, handmade, industrial & scientific, automotive parts & accessories, CDs & vinyl, tools & home improvement products. Now over 3 billion products can be found on Amazon throughout 11 marketplaces worldwide.
Microsoft
Founded in 1975 by Bill Gates and Paul Allen, Microsoft was brought into the marketplace, developing, manufacturing, licensing, supporting and selling microcomputer software. College drop-out Bill and Paul started the firm in a small garage in Albuquerque. Their very first product was BASIC, another type of programming language which was to be used for the Altair 8800, a personal computer.
Since then, they’ve brought out countless products including:
- Microsoft Access
- Microsoft Excel
- Microsoft OneNote
- Microsoft Outlook
- Microsoft Power BI
- Microsoft PowerPoint
- Microsoft Project
- Microsoft Publisher
And that’s just to name a few!
Disney
With humble beginnings, Walt Disney and Roy Disney began filming Alice’s Wonderland in Los Angeles, in their uncle’s garage.
In 1923 Walt and Roy journeyed to California with their fictional story, their Alice Comedies – which proved to be successful as M.J.Winkler saw potential in the Disney brothers, so he agreed to distribute their work. In 1923, the Disney company became official. Initially, the company was named Disney Brothers Cartoon Studio – but the name soon changed at Roy’s request, and it is now known as the Walt Disney Studio.
Harley Davidson
At the age of 21, motorbike enthusiast, William S. Harley drew up a bicycle with a small engine, which William and his friend, Arthur then built together a couple of years later in a small garage in Wisconsin, in 1903.
Harley Davidson is now one of the largest and most famous motorcycle companies in the world today.
Yankee Candle
The Yankee Candle Company started in 1969, when Michael Kittredge made his first scented Christmas candle for his mother, made out of melted crayons. Friends of his mother were interested in his creations and soon, he was producing them quickly and in larger quantities as the word began to spread.
Michael’s school friends helped him to fund a start-up business and this led to what we now know and love as, Yankee Candle.
