How to Install an Exterior Side Door for your Garage

Installing a side door in your garage is a fantastic way to increase the usability of your garage, making the space more readily accessible, while still maintaining full security. 

For these reasons, at Zap Garage Doors, we have had an increasing number of our customers ask us to install side doors in their garages.

Below, our garage door specialists have outlined the full process for installing a side door for a garage, plus the key points that you will need to consider before commencing installation. 

 

What are the benefits of garage side doors? 

There are many reasons why a property owner may choose to invest in a garage side door. 

Although it might seem strange – after all, there is already a door at the front! – this is actually a relatively quick, simple and affordable way to maximise the utility of your garage. This is especially true if your existing garage front door is difficult or cumbersome to use, or requires manual operation. 

The benefits of adding a garage side door include: 

  • Making it easier to access the garage – by allowing you to open a simple standard door, rather than the larger, main door) 
  • Improving safety – by providing an alternative exit, in the event of an emergency. 
  • Maintaining the same high security standards – with a robust and secure locked door. 
  • Improving airflow – as you can leave the door ajar, to bring some fresh air into the room (thereby also reducing the risk of damp or mould buildup). 
  • Reducing your wear on the main door – thereby helping to increase its lifespan. 
  • Increasing the value of your property – with an attractive, convenient and sought-after addition to your garage. 
  • Easy access to manual override on Garage Doors in the event of a power cut

 

Points to consider before installing a garage side door

Before you get started, here are a few key questions that you will need to answer. 

  • What door size would work best for you? Typically, standard exterior doors are 900mm wide, and 2100mm high. 
  • What materials do you already have available? Will you need a pre-hung door (with the frame and hinges included), or do you only need a door slab? All of ZAP Side Doors are Pre Frame.
  • Have you confirmed that there are no electrical wires present in the area where you’re planning to install the door? If there are, then you may need to enlist a professional to reroute them for you. 
  • Have you checked that any plumbing systems won’t interfere with the installation? 
  • Have you confirmed that the wall you’re installing the door on is not a load-bearing wall, and does not serve as a structural reinforcement for the garage?

The standard process for garage side door installations 

Mark out the width and height with space for the frame

Once you’ve chosen your door, mark out the exact dimensions of the door (ensuring you leave space for the frame). Use a spirit level to ensure a neat, precise result. 

 

Cut out the brickwork

Using an angle grinder or a Brick saw, carefully cut along this outline. You must then install a lintel at this point.

We recommend you start the brick cutting by first making shallow cuts, before gradually deepening them. This will help to minimise the stress placed on the rest of the wall. Once you’ve fully cut through the outline, remove the loose bricks (using a hammer and chisel).

 

Install the frame

Insert the door frame into the opening. Check that it fits neatly and flush within the area that you’ve cut. If you’re happy with the fit, secure it in place using a masonry anchor (going from the bottom of the frame, upwards). Use a spirit level to check that the frame is even, then screw it into the brickwork. 

 

Install the door

Finally, attach the door hinges to the frame, mount the door in place, and add handles and locks. Confirm that the door is opening and closing smoothly, then it’s ready for use!

It needed an adjustment shortly afterwards, which was done without question.

Very helpful people,
After fitting the side opening garage doors and frame, it exposed old paint and the original frame pointing which would have normally be covered with a finishing strip.
However I Preferred to repoint and remove the old paint from the brickwork my self. To which the fitting guys said that’s fine we will return at your convenience and finish the door frame to wall with sealer and make sure I was completely happy with their work before leaving.

Having purchased my garage door from Zap 2 years ago John and Declan came to service it 30.9.24. From first to last this has been an excellent service and we absolutely delighted with the end result. Dean came to measure up and give us a price promptly and offered good advice on what to choose. We were very impressed with his approach and decided to go ahead without delay. The boys fitted the doors on the hottest day of the heatwave and were so polite and cheerful despite the soaring temperature and being on a south facing drive. I should of had the door fitted yesterday, but due to an error on my behalf, ended up leaving them high and dry.
Regardless of that. They were back within 24hrs in order to facilitate the install...

They arrived just after 9 and were done and dusted before 12.

HI there I would like to thank everyone at the company for such a great turn around, I had been looking for garage doors for my new garage build for about 3 months, getting quotes, waiting for surveyors etc, then i came across this company, from the off talking to Paul on the phone asking him questions etc he wanted to help and guided me on what I needed to do etc, he arranged a survey within in the week (others i had to wait 2-3 weeks) he came out and measured explained what was needed and how it would proceed, he didn't come across as pushy, or was in a rush to leave, I decided to go ahead with them, told me it would take about 3 weeks for the doors to be made! which was excellent considering other company's were telling me 6-8 weeks! 2 weeks in I get a phone call saying they were ready! I came to fit them the following day, the 2 lads that came (Joe and Jono) were very polite, explained what they were going to do and showed me how things worked, I felt relaxed around them and could have a conversation with them, they fitted the doors and transformed the garage, I would highly recommend this company, they make quality products to a high standard and for competitive prices, the team is very helpful, they don't give you the can't be arsed attitude which I got off other well known company's (cough cough garage door company) I will be using them in the future if I have other projects. When we needed a new garage door Zap were the only ones to actualky come out to measure up for a quote. All the rest used pictures I sent and measurements. We're glad he did as he spotted a problem with the frame that would need it strengthening. Fitters arrived on time and made putting the new door in effortless. All the time social distancing and doing a very clean and tidy job. All stuff was cleaned away & old garage door taken too. The new door looks great and is so much better. I would concure with the review from Sharon Dyson. Zap from Wakefield were excellent from start to finish. We initially visited the Zap showroom and there was met by Christine, who was very helpful and professional. Christine showed us various doors, explained how they worked, an idea about pricing, she was a pleasure to speak with and an excellent representative for the company. Philip the salesman came to the house and gave us a good competitive quote for 2 composite doors and a garage door with electric motor. There was no hard sell, the conversation was relaxed, but professional, and we decided we would book for the work to be done. The work team arrived on time and completed the work to a very good standard. They were friendly, tidy and professional. I have just had to call Zap back after couple of months due to the back door sticking when closing it. Christine again was superb arranging for someone to come out in about a week to sort it out. Thank you.

I’d like to share my opinion on Zap Garage Doors Wakefield it’s not a normal thing for me but when a company as gone that extra mile to help me and my husband to make a decision on a garage door which makes a massive improvement to the front of our house I think it’s only right to say so

I will be honest I looked at the reviews before hand and a little doubtful but we had be recommended to this firm and I’m so glad I used them there salesman which I think is called Phil was brilliant no hard sales at all just a genuine guy and so bubbly we was so happy to let Zap do our Garage door and the service didn’t just stop there we was informed when the door would be fitted

On the day of fitting two gentlemen came and introduced themselves and just got on with the job I kept them full with tea/coffee oh and biscuits and when they was done the gentlemen went through how the door worked and made sure I was happy with everything which I was over the moon what a difference loved it

So I would definitely recommend and will be recommending them
