How to Organise your Cluttered Garage

by Zap Garage Doors|29 October, 2024

Even the most house-proud people are often guilty of having a slightly cluttered garage.

After all, when you’ve spent the week cleaning and sorting the rest of your home, it’s all too easy to put the garage clean off for another week.

We’ve all been there – most garages are pretty chaotic!

How about yours? Is your garage picture-perfect, or are you also guilty of leaving it a bit messy?

To help us all make the most out of our garages, we’ve shared our top tips for organising a cluttered garage. That way, we can maximise this valuable extra space, and make it another room to be proud of!

How do we use our garages?

The most obvious use for a garage is for parking our cars. But, in the UK, more than half of garage-owners don’t actually use their garage to park their cars.

Interestingly, 68% of drivers (who own garages, but don’t park their cars in them) said that they don’t use their garages for car storage because they have too many other items stored there!

So, there are two big perks to sorting out our garages. Firstly, of course, we can use them for parking the car. But secondly, we can start to maximise the space, for other purposes.

There are many great ways to use a garage, including:

  • Storage (e.g. tool storage or bike storage)
  • As a workshop or DIY space
  • As a space for your hobbies (e.g. for home fitness)
  • As a home office
  • As an entertainment space
  • As an extra space for guests to stay

How can you maximise your garage space?

If you’re intrigued by these use cases, keep reading.

Below, we’ve shared our top tips for using your garage space more effectively.

Shelving

With a few well-placed shelves, you can get your items off the floor and out of boxes. It’s also a great way to group the items that you’re storing in your garage, so that they’re easier to sort and find in the future.

Overhead storage

If you’ve got a lot of stuff, take your storage options one step further! With overhead storage, you can make the most of the higher levels of your garage, and even your roof.

This is a great option for things that you don’t often use, such as seasonal decorations. You can even label the storage shelves or boxes, so that the items are still easy to find.

A secure garage door

By investing in a new garage door, you can significantly increase the security of your garage. This is ideal if you want to use your garage for storage, or for a new hobby, as it will help to ensure that your items are safe, and allow you to store higher-value items there (e.g. your computer, for a home office setup).

Optimise your wall space

All too often, walls are left bare, and the space is wasted!

Look for shelving units, wall hooks and wall-mounted cabinets. Or, you could find even more innovative solutions, like wall mounts for your bicycles. This is a great way to maximise your floor space.

Cabinets and drawers

Then for your smaller items, cabinets and drawers are a great way to safely store and neatly sort your items.

While cabinets are great for medium-sized items, drawers are the best choice for small items. So, choose your new garage furnishing based on what you need to store there.

Create a multi-functional space

With all the solutions listed above, not only are these great storage solutions, but they are also perfect for helping you create a multi-functional space.

Rather than feeling like you have to dedicate your garage to one sole purpose, with the right storage system in place, you can neatly store all your items, while still leaving plenty of space for a hobby, office or guest room.

Looking to upgrade your garage?

If you’re ready to give your garage a new lease of life, then a new garage door is a fantastic place to start.

With a new garage door, you can increase the security and usability of your garage, while making the space more attractive and enjoyable to be in.
