Can I upgrade to an Automatic Garage Door?

by Zap Garage Doors|31 January, 2022

One of the most common questions that we get asked is, ‘Can I upgrade my existing garage door to an automatic model?’.

And, although we may be biased, we can completely see why – automatic garage doors are a fantastic investment, which improve the usability, value and security of your property.

Plus, if you can simply upgrade your existing garage door to an automatic model, then you can reduce waste and save yourself money too – talk about a win-win!

So, in answer to this FAQ, yes, most garage doors can be upgraded to an automatic garage door

Below, we’ll be delving into more detail, explaining the scenarios where you can simply upgrade to an automatic garage door (as well as those where we wouldn’t recommend it).

We would recommend upgrading to an automatic garage door if:

  • You have an overhead garage door

These are quick, easy and affordable to automate.

  • You have a side-hinged garage door

With the addition of a hydraulic electromechanical operator, or a swing arm, these can be automated relatively easily.

  • You have an up and over garage door

These are renowned for being the easiest type of garage door to automate.

  • You have a sectional garage door

Again, these are easy garage doors for a professional to automate.

  • You have a roller garage door

With the addition of a motor, these garage doors can be automated. However, a professional will need to take apart the door first, before it can be automated. So, it may take longer and cost more than the other door types listed above.

You will also need to check whether your garage has sufficient space to install an electric opener. Your garage will also need to have access to a power source, in order for this to work.

We wouldn’t recommend upgrading if:

  • Your garage door is more than 10 years old

The investment of automation is unlikely to be returned to you, as an older door will be more prone to faults.

  • A specialist notices damage or deterioration in your existing door

Consult a garage door specialist and ask them to assess the condition of your existing door. If they advise you that the condition isn’t great, then don’t invest in automation.

  • You have a canopy garage door

This is the most difficult and expensive garage door type to automate.

  • The door is stiff or rattles

If the garage door does not move as it should, then you will have to pay for repair costs on top of the automation costs. Depending on the types of parts that need replacing, this could quickly build up to a higher cost than you were expecting.

  • The model type is incompatible

Some garage doors (most commonly older models) are simply not built to be automated.

What are the benefits of investing in an automatic garage door?

Automating your garage doors will significantly increase the convenience and usability of your garage. Automatic doors are infinitely easier to open and close, which will make you far more likely to utilise this extra bit of space to its full advantage.

In addition to its sheer convenience, automatic garage doors are extremely secure, thereby improving the safety of your property.

These doors are far safer than their non-automatic counterparts, with in-built safety features that are ideal for both homes and commercial properties alike. Plus, the risk of break-ins will plummet, as attempted thieves will inevitably be deterred by this high level of home security.
