Choosing the best garage door colour for your home

by Zap Garage Doors|18 July, 2022

One of the biggest factors behind investing in a new garage door is the way that it refreshes the aesthetic of your property.

Amongst their numerous other benefits, these new, pristine garage doors create the impression of a neat, modern and sleek house.

Homeowners will, naturally, want to maximise the aesthetic benefits of this investment. So, that will mean choosing the perfect colour for their new garage door.

Unsurprisingly, colour is a huge factor now in choosing a garage door. And garage door colour advice makes up some of our customer’s most commonly asked questions.

So, we’ve shared this quick guide on how to pick the best colour for your garage door.

5 dos when choosing your garage door colour

Here at 5 tips when choosing the colour of your new garage door.

Match your door trim to the rest of the door

This is a great way to create a chic, modern aesthetic. What’s more, these matching colours can actually create the impression of your house looking larger.

Think about matching your door colour to the colour of your house

For example, if your house is brown, choosing a muted beige or brown tone is an easy win. This will ensure your door blends into the exterior aesthetic of your house seamlessly.

Choose two shades of the same colour

If you do want to choose two different colours for your frame or door trim, or between your door and home, we recommend sticking to a two shade colour radius. So, if your home is cream, don’t go beyond two lighter or darker shades of cream.

Or, if you do want a colour, use complementary colours

To ensure your colour choice matches the rest of your home, use the colour wheel. This will help you see what colours best compliment each other. For instance, if your home is red, a green door will be the best fit.

Choose wooden grains for older homes

Often, bright or unnatural painted colours can create a harsh contrast, whereas natural wood will enhance the rustic charm of your home.

Although they can look great on some occasions, if you’re unsure, stick to a wooden grain finish.

5 don’ts when choosing your garage door colour

Here are 5 things to avoid when choosing a colour for your new garage door.

If you’re new to home décor, don’t wing it

Some homeowners might feel comfortable creating palettes and pairing different colours together. But, if design isn’t in your skillset, we wouldn’t recommend risking it – you could find that after a few weeks, you get sick of your impulse decision!

Don’t choose a mismatched colour palette for the time period of your property

For instance, bold or unnatural colours can really clash with a period property. So, we recommend sticking with natural, wood grains. Or, if you do want a colour, look for heritage paint colours.

Don’t go for three different colours

At least two of the colours in your home exterior – out of the door, door frame or house itself – should match. Otherwise, this can look a bit clumsy.

Don’t ignore the colour wheel

Straying from the complimentary colour advice of the colour wheel can create clashing, unpleasant colour pairings.

Don’t make a decision if you’re unsure

If you still can’t make a decision, we’d recommend seeing the doors in person, to see if that makes the decision easier. Whatever you do, don’t just make an impulse decision!

And remember, you can always ask your door supplier for their advice about your colour choice.
